Overview
YouReader is a Chrome extension that extracts transcripts from YouTube videos and processes them using AI to create organized summaries. The service includes user accounts, usage tracking, and optional paid plans.
Data Collection and Usage
What We Collect
When you use this extension, the following data is collected:
1. Account Information
- Email address (via Google sign-in or email registration)
- Name (from Google profile or provided at registration)
- Hashed password (email/password accounts only; we never store plaintext passwords)
- Account tier (free or pro)
2. YouTube Video Data
- Video URL
- Video ID
- Video title
- Transcript text (captions/subtitles)
3. Usage Data
- Number of processing requests per month
- Token counts and processing time per request
- AI model used for processing
4. Local Browser Data
- Authentication token (stored locally in your browser)
- Server URL (stored locally in your browser)
- Saved transcript library (stored locally in your browser)
- Extension preferences (stored locally in your browser)
How We Use Your Data
- Transcript Processing: Video transcripts are sent to our server for AI-powered processing (cleaning, organizing, and summarizing). Transcripts are not permanently stored on our servers after processing is complete.
- Account Management: Account information is used to authenticate you and manage your subscription tier.
- Usage Enforcement: Usage data is tracked to enforce monthly request limits for free-tier accounts.
- No Sharing: We do not sell, share, or distribute your personal data to third parties.
- No Tracking: We do not track your browsing history or YouTube viewing habits beyond the videos you choose to process.
Data Storage
- Server-side: User accounts and usage records are stored in databases on our server. We retain usage data for billing and rate-limiting purposes.
- Browser-side: Authentication tokens, preferences, and your saved transcript library are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage APIs. This data is not sent to our servers.
- Transcripts: Video transcripts are processed in memory and returned to your browser. They are not permanently stored on our servers.
Third-Party Services
This extension uses:
- YouTube: To access video transcripts (subject to YouTube's Terms of Service)
- Google Sign-In: For account authentication (subject to Google's Privacy Policy)
- AI Processing: Our server uses AI models (via Azure OpenAI and other providers) to process transcripts. The transcript content is sent to these AI service providers for processing.
- Stripe: For payment processing on paid plans. We do not store your payment card details; all payment information is handled directly by Stripe (subject to Stripe's Privacy Policy).

- Host permissions for youtube.com: To extract video transcripts
- Host permissions for youreaderapp.com: To send transcripts for AI processing and manage your account
Your Rights
You can:
- Disconnect from the service at any time via the extension popup
- Clear all locally stored data (library, preferences) by removing the extension
- Request deletion of your account and associated usage data by contacting us
- Request a copy of your personal data by contacting us
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify users of any material changes by updating the "Last Updated" date.
